Sharma conferred Honorary Professorship

Palpa, Feb 14: Federation of Nepali Journalist (FNJ) – Palpa Chapter on Monday conferred the 'Creative Journalism Award' to National News Agency (RSS) correspondent, Krishna Darnal. FNJ President Dr Mahendra Bista feted journalist Darnal with cash prize and an appreciation letter in recognition for a decade – long contribution in journalism sector. The FNJ – Palpa Chapter marked its 10th convention and feted 14 journalists based in Palap including the RSS correspondent. Journalists Yagya Murti Timalsina, Mukti Neupane, Tika Ram Basyal, Sita Dotel and Srijana Ghimire were also the recipients of the 'Creative Journalism Award'. On the occasion, journalist Shankar Bhandari was honoured with the 'Social Service Journalism Award'. Likewise, 'Human Rights Journalism Award' was conferred on Raj Kumar Ale, 'Social Awareness Journalism Award' on Bhoj Raj Bhattarai and 'Rural Journalism Award' on Basudev Dhakal. The 'Outstanding Journalism Award' was conferred on Rekhiram Rana, Krishna Pokharel and Gita Gyawali. At the programme, FNJ's former President Dr Suresh Acharya was honoured with the 'Meghgovinda Jhapendra Journalism Award'. FNJ's incumbent President Bista conferred the award on the former FNJ head. Stay order to stop appointment of Chand as IGP


  The Supreme Court has today issued a stay order in the name of the government to not implement the cabinet decision to promote DIG of Nepal Police Jaya Bahadur Chand to the post of Inspector General of Police.

A single bench of Chief Justice Sushila Karki issued the order citing rule 41 of the Police Regulations 2071 B.S. that calls for seniority, work efficiency, ability to assume responsibilities, provide leadership and mobilize subordinate personnel. It has thereby halted appointment, assumption of post or any other related acts.

"Considering the adherence of the standards set for the post of IGP and sensitivity of the matter, a conclusion has to be reached to whether issue an interim order following deliberations with both the parties," reads the order.

The order by the apex court comes in response to the writ petition filed on Friday by advocate Kapildev Dhakal seeking an order to stop the appointment of Chand as the next IGP. The Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers has been named as the defendant in the writ.

The stay order today was issued following a hearing on the writ petition. On behalf of the petitioner, senior advocates Shambhu Thapa, Badri Bahadur Karki, Tulsa Bhatta among others had pleaded.

It may noted be that the Council of Ministers meeting this morning decided to appoint Chand to the post of IGP. Chand is third in-line in terms of seniority in the police organization.

Six injured after passenger bus overturns



Nawalparasi, Feb 12: As many as six persons were injured when a passenger bus overturned this morning at Naya Belahani locality in Nawalparasi along the East – West Highway.

The bus (Lu 1 Kha 62 74) heading west swerved out of control and turned on its left side. The injured passengers from Kavrepalanchowk, Sindhupalchowk, Gulmi, Sunsari and Saptari districts were rushed to Purano Medical College, Bharatpur for treatment. RSS

Cabinet appoints chiefs of two security organs

Kathmandu, Feb 12: The government has appointed the chiefs of Nepal Police and Armed Police Force (APF). The Cabinet meeting held at Singha Durbar today took the decision on appointing Jaya Bahadur Chand as the Inspector General of Police (IGP) of Nepal Police and Singh Bahadur Shrestha as the Inspector General of Armed Police Force, Government Spokesperson, Surendra Kumar Karki said.
